Wedding Ring
At night under sheets my warm skin fills you
You cling to my flesh, content
In the morning cold, you slouch on my knuckle
Like a missed quoit
Threaten imminent abandonment
So I fiddle you, work, spin,
Fidget you away and turn you on my thumb
A thought thimble
Then slide you back slick on my ready finger
If I remove you; detain you on the bedside table
You sulk amongst watches and spectacles
Stare skywards, lidless, ignore me
Until my shadow falls
When you catch my eye and look away
Or if I hide you in a pocket
You press my thigh and print a dim glimmer
On whatever you touch
Roundly smooth with an edge for cutting
There is a box in a drawer with another like you
From another time
I could join you in holy darkness
Two golden eyes burning in wood
I could take you to market for the worth of your weight
Melt you from my head
But not from my empty finger’s muscle memory
You attract. I repel.
Can feel you now. Jittery. Seeking north
